how to eat

  • Please do not stand or walk while you eat. Sit down. At a table and not on the couch. Even if you are eating alone. Especially if you are eating alone.
  • Stop eating out of plastic take-out containers and stop using plastic utensils. If you get take out, you can still pour the food onto a bonafide plate.
  • Stop reading or working on the computer while you eat. Instead, put on some peaceful music. Light some candles. Get tranquil. Use a cloth napkin.
  • Arrange your food in your loveliest vessels, preferably handmade ones, and you will actually taste it. And eat less. And walk away from the table more satisfied.

The handmade vessels thing is totally true. When we eat from the things I made in pottery class, the food is so much better!

I agree...food should always be a flavorful experience.

Great TIps! Btw, I'll be in Philly cheering on my brother in the ING Half Marathon. If you're competing...have a great race! ~EVV

I read a "diet book" by a professional restaurant critic who happened to be a rather attractive and slim woman.

In a nutshell, she doesn't eat a lot of food, but she focuses on tasting each bite as much as possible.

I tried this out at a few holiday dinners when I was trying to lose weight. I took a small portion of everything. Since I gave my near undivided attention to the taste of the food, I didn't feel like I missed out on anything and I was happy with just one plate of food.

Many people who over eat aren't really enjoying their food, as food. They are enjoying the mechanical motion of eating it as a distraction.

Wonderful. This is the practice of Ayurveda. It's not what you eat, but HOW you eat. Thanks.

I fail at this.

This is so true. Oftentimes we forget about enjoying simple, intimate things in life when we get too busy. <3

I totally agree about presentation. I love colors and style in my food. A lot of vegan food gets a bad rep, because it's just slapped on a plate. AND I hate walking and eating. I have to sit down. Even to eat a pretzel in the mall (pre-vegan) I have to sit down.
