meet bunny, the easter kitty

"Phew. Sure beats skulking around on the street, scavenging for food."

I don't know if they find me or I find them...Either way, I do believe it's kizmet. As I was driving home from Whole Foods on Easter Sunday to procure provisions for a picnic, I spotted a cute cat in my neighborhood, skulking strangely as she crossed the street. It seemed as if she was [wisely] terrified of the traffic; she didn't have the confident trot of the neighborhood ferals. I tried to entice her with food. Although she did not run away, she hid her head in a basement window gutter, like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand. I carefully approached her and she let me pick her up. Within 2 minutes, she was purring like a little motor. She seemed utterly relieved. I took her inside and gave her some food and water [much to Bossa Nova's aggressive disapproval].

"Why would someone would abandon a kitty as cute and sweet as me?"

How appropriate that I found her on Easter Sunday, a holiday that symbolizes rebirth and renewal. I named her Bunny. I'm not sure what exactly happened to Bunny that led to her being out on the street, but one thing's for sure: she is not feral. She is totally comfortable with being held, and definitely enjoyed the human touch. She might have been abandoned. [Yes, it happens more often than you think]. It's also possible that she ran away, but given her personality, I doubt it.

"The cat carrier is not as scary as I thought it would be."

I drove her over to Lois' Cat Rescue. Tomorrow, Bunny is scheduled for a feline leukemia test and the usual shots. They'll also shave her belly to see if she's been spayed, and if not, she'll also get fixed.

"Oh boy! Lois says I can hang out with all the nice kitties and eat wet food when we get to her place!"

Bunny is friendly, calm and quite petite. I don't think she's full grown. She also has beautiful tortoise-shell/fragmented markings. [Dr. X thinks she looks like a Picasso!] Lois says she is doing amazingly well. If you'd like to adopt Bunny, please leave a comment with some contact info. Lois is also housing other fabulous cats and kittens who desperately need -- and deserve forever homes.

What a beautiful cat. I'm glad someone compassionate found her and hopefully she'll find a great home. I know people who have abandoned cats - and it's awful. It makes me so sad, and it's cruel.

What a pretty kitty! I actually have a cat staying with me right now that we found. He showed up on our doorstep one day. He wasn't feral either, I think someone abandoned the poor guy :( It's supposed to be a temporary stay until we find him a new home, but he's been here for like 3 months already.

You are awesome for rescuing Bunny!

True that she's got something of a Picasso's. I hope Bunny will find a new home soon. Is feline Leukemia very spread in USA?

Aw she is quite beautiful, she's lucky to have found you. I think "cat friendly people" have some magnetic energy that cats can see/feel. My mom has attracted 3 stray cats this year, it's just part of being an animal lover! :)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I assume you got her scanned to check for a microchip?

As a former Philadelphian (who for many years was the proud caretaker of a West Philly tortie), cat rescuer, and vegan, I love your blog. Bless you for caring about this gal!

Bunny is so adorable and beautiful! I might be interested in adopting her. We have another cat and he is in desperate need of a friend (he loves other cats). Do you know if she likes other kitties? Can we chat about her if you have some time? The other problem is that I am leaving in two days for a three week work trip...

Lovely kitten. Probably not aferal. Ferals are not shy, you are right. Over here we snip a bit of the ear to identify those who have been spayed. I hope she was "lost"

The latest....she was scanned: no microchip. She was in heat but not pregnant--and not spayed (Grrrr!) so I caught her just in the nick of time. She tested negative for feline leuk/aids. and got spayed and her shots. She's probably about 1 year old and has never had kittens. She could have escaped from her owner?

Am looking around the neighborhood and online to see if anyone is missing a cat. But if you're interested in her, please drop me a line.

Mer: I just saw your note....give me your email address. Yes, we can chat. I'm also going away next week, but I can put you in touch with Lois.

I believe this girl gets on with other cats. She is very chill and lovable.

What a great Easter surprise. She is so pretty. Rather like those Calico cats that are so popular now. Bunny is so lucky to have found such a perfect home to live in.

Hey! I think I have now sent you my email address through the blog? I am pretty computer challenged so sorry if I didn't get this right!

Mer: Someone already adopted Bunny! I am so sorry...she is scheduled to be picked up tomorrow. If it does not go through, I will let you know.

Lois always has many other cats for adoption if you are interested (including kittens, a sweet black female and a cool, male Maine-Coonish looking cat). I'll check for your email....stay tuned.

Thank you for opening your heart. XO

Greetings from Indonesia where I am currently on business! Thank you so much for your email and for letting me know about Bunny. I am sad that she is gone (what a beautiful, sweet looking lady!), but am very happy that she has found a home. My mom always says that there are 100000s of animals that need homes so it is never a shame if one you like finds a home--it is a blessing since there are always more to be adopted! I will definitely check out Lois when I return--we got our current pet from the Arlington animal shelter so we check their site often too, but it is always nice to know about other shelters. Great news for Bunny!

You're the pied piper of kitties!

Mer: Bunny was returned because she was not great with little kids. She is a cuddly and sweet cat who cuddled up with the owners in bed every night. If you still want to adopt her, please email me: theurbanvegan@yahoo.com
