sambazon winner, punkin' update and misc food porn

Watermelon radishes that came in last week's organic CSA share
Work. Marathon training. Cookbook promo. Stray-cat whispering. With everything going on this week, I'm just going to let to do the pictures do the talking...after I announce the winner of the Sambazon giveaway. Congratulations.....drumroll....Hannah! Congrats! Email me your address so we can send your vouchers.

I boiled them with stock, potatoes and onions to make this very thick pink soup. What it lacks in looks it made up for with flavor – intense, rich comfort.

As you know, I have been working, with the help of Green Street Rescue, to try to trap-neuter-release some Philly feral cats along my running path. Only Punkin' turned out to be a lover-boy and not feral. He is now off the streets and is at Operation Ava, a fab no-kill shelter. He likes his new roomie, but he's not too keen about the barking doggies.  He's waiting for his forever home. If you are looking for a lap-cat, he's your man – super friendly. I wish I could take him. Look at those big eyes!

Back to food porn. Eggplant Dengaku from Appetite for Reduction I added more agave because I am not sophisticated enough for pure umami.

Vegetable soup made from CSA share fodder.

Black radishes from a recent CSA share I had never tasted them before. They're extra piquant – more fun to look at than to eat. But I used them in a potato-black radish salad recipe from Chocolate and Zucchini and the blandness of the taters balanced out the saucy spice of the radishes.

My latest obsession is Trader Joe's Seaweed Snacks.  Whenever I nosh on them, Pablo races across the room and literally whines until I share. He even tried the wasabi version. Once.

I had black radish in a salad I recently ate at Tender Greens in Santa Monica. It was so strong I thought it was horseradish at first, but I like spicy and thought it was great. So happy Punkin is in a good home!
