keepin' it fresh with vejibag :: review and giveaway contest

vejibag
I kept spinach fresh in my Vejibag for nearly two weeks,
Since I have a CSA share, my fridge continually overflows with produce. Keeping things fresh is a constant challenge. As soon as I bring my produce home, I photograph it for posterity and then start figuring out the best way to store each item for the long haul. I usually resort to plastic bags for items like kale and bok choy.

vejibag
Made in the USA. Cute, rustic label, too
The nice folks at Veibag sent me one of their bags to review. They claimed their organic cotton bags create a humid environment that helps keep veggies fresher longer – for up to 2 weeks. You need to wet the bag thoroughly, then squeeze out the excess moisture to create the perfect preservation station for your produce. The bags feel similar to a terry cloth towel. They are machine washable.

vejibag bok choy
Boy choy, Day 1
I decided to put mine to the test. I picked up some CSA share bok choy on a Wednesday...

Day 12 and still fresh and lovely
And here it is the following Sunday, almost two weeks later, looking just as fresh as on day 1.

I recommend Vejibag. It lives up to its promises if you follow the direction. And as someone who has suffered the heartbreak of tossing produce gone bad, I can honestly say that this bag will pay for itself. You can order Vejibags online here.

vejibag kale
It also worked wonders on curly kale. This one only kept a week but that's because I was hungry for the kale and couldn't wait any longer.
Vejibag Giveaway Contest!
Feeling lucky? The nice folks at Vejibag have offered to send one lucky reader a free Vejibag. Just leave a comment and tell us the last type of produce in your 'fridge that went bad. Be sure to include an email or blog where I can contact you [Hear that, "Anonymouses?"] I'll announce the winner next week. Good luck. And keep it fresh

Please don't squeeze the produce.
Until then, I leave you with this produce truck I spotted while driving home from my run one morning. I'll bet they contract with local restaurants here in Philly. *groan* [Sorry, my guilty pleasures include oaky chardonnay and really bad puns.]

My bunches of chard always suffer! I'll sautee most of the bunch the first day or two but, of course, it doesn't all fit in my biggest frying pan so I'll set those last three leaves aside for a future recipe...

...annnnd five days later there's a bag of red stalks covered in green slime at the bottom of my veggie drawer.

I am the worst when it comes to produce going bad! I recently found some really wilty kale & a downright soggy eggplant behind my almond milk.

I've been wondering if the bags lived up to their claims, and apparently they do! It's so sad when veggies turn yellow and slimy before their time.

My last batch of fresh cilantro went bad.

My greens go bad sometimes. A Vegibag would be so helpful!

Kale is a pain to keep fresh! This vejibag sounds like a miracle product...!

Cool! I was wonder'n about these. My last too-young-to-die veggies was and always is cilantro. Kind of a pain when you only use a little bit at a time.

My last refrigerator casualty was collard greens. I could really use a couple of those bags!

The last to succumb to slime was some kale and fresh herbs. Not pretty!

I bought some organic field greens which were all babys. Three days in my fridge and slimo. This is an environmental fridge with compartments by temp. I saved a long long time for it. It doesn't do the job.

The Pick-Your-Own aspect to my CSA has been allows me as much swiss chard as I want, but it really doesn't hold up. oxox johanna@woodbury.org

I would love a vegibag to keep my spinach in! I buy so much for salads/smoothies, but it always goes bad :(

Fun giveaway! My last bit of funky produce was a sad little bag of kale that had gotten smushed under something else. A very unique scent. Usually the kale doesn't last a day in my fridge.

I wonder if Yankee Candle might start carrying special scents that tell your guests when it's time to go home? Like "Moldy Lemon," "Liquid Lettuce," or "Ashtray"? Someone needs to get on that.

That would solve many of my problems! Greens are usually the first thing to go bad in my house, especially kale which always breaks my heart a little! thanks for hosting the giveaway!

I've been using spent grain bags from homebrewing for my CSA produce but these bags look like an even better idea! My last veggies headed straight for the compost were a small pile of slimy, moldy okra. So sad!

I always have problems with cilantro and parsley going back quickly in the plastic bags. This would be a great alternative!

Ah, I love a good bad pun! Too funny! My problematic green is definitely cilantro. I love cilantro and include it in plenty of things, but I just can't seem to get through a bunch before it gets brown & wet.

Oh I would love to try this! I also have a CSA and while I try to keep up with everything I get, I did lose out on some beet greens recently because I didn't get to them in time and they had already gone brown/wet/bad :(

I just had to toss 2 disgustingly moldy cucumbers. So sad, as they were organic from my CSA...but really, who wants to eat cucumbers in that condition?

A vegibag sadly wouldn't have helped my eggplant that was bad when I finally figured out what I wanted to do with it! It sounds great though for greens..I would love to try one!

I had some peppers that turned moldy way before they should've. Sigh.

cilantro and arugula. they seems to usually be good for maybe three days tops and then it is a pretty rapid decline to yellow, then slime. i have teh green plastic veg. bags, but would love to compare the difference...

Ugh, I have a constant battle with food going bad in the fridge. Last week I tossed what had previously been a beautiful bunch of basil after it wilted and turned brown overnight. :(

Believe it or not, the last produce to go bad in my fridge was strawberries. I hate wasting any food whatsoever so I did manage to salvage about half of them that weren't moldy or squishy. Blech.

Had to toss some squash recently.....I have a CSA for the first time this year and it has been a struggle sometimes to use everything while fresh. This bag sounds awesome.

CSA chard... so sad!

Collard greens ALWAYS turn yellow on me. I have tried everything. Sadly now I just stick them right in the freezer. No raw wraps for lunch late in the week for me.

I lost a big sack of home-grown spinach. Muy triste!

this would be perfect for me! lettuce and basil and other leafy goodies usually go bad first in my fridge.

Cucumbers always go slimy and mushy on me before I can use them up. I would love to see how they fare in a vejibag.

Spinach and kale! I'm so bad to overbuy my greens and then they go bad so quickly. I'd love to try the bags out to see how much longer I can keep them fresh!

Found a small cabbage in the bottom of icebox from seven months before. Outer leaves wilted, center fine and trying to grow.

Life is not a spectator sport. If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're wasting your life. See the link below for more info.
