Their motto is "Fashion with Compassion"; all Bourgeous Boheme leather-free kickers are made from sustainable materials used include microfiber faux leathers and suede and natural and organic fabrics. These nice folks are offering UrbanVegan readers 15% off for their new ranges of footwear and accessories (excluding sales items, of course). Just key in the code "BoBoUV" when you check out.

You can win a signed copy of Nava's latest book.

Contest.  We all know and love Nava Atlas because she is a prolific vegan cookbook author. But all that healthy chow feeds Nava's energy; she is also a visual artist and a writer. Her newest book, The Literary Ladies' Guide to the Writing Life profiles a dozen celebrated female authors, including my all-time favorite, Anaïs Nin. Nava has kindly offered to give away a signed copy of her new book to one lucky reader. Leave a comment with the name of your favorite literary lady (She doesn't have to be featured in Nava's book). Nava will pick the winner. Stay tuned.

This light is really disturbing my beauty rest.

Kitty. Many of you have been asking about Buttons, the kitty whom I rescued from the street behind my house several years ago. [Post first appeared on my original, now-defunct blog.] As you can see, her present life as a feline odalisque is quite a contrast from her former life in the gutter. She's older, perhaps 12 or so, but very frisky; she loves to sleep, wrestle with her BFF  Pablo, and play with her toy mouse. Bossa Nova still doesn't like her, but she tolerates her, which is an improvement.

My favorite literary lady is Margaret Atwood. I love that she is equally as amazing at writing novels, poetry and short stories.

I'd say Aimee Bender. She's newer than most who would probably be listed here, but she is a brilliant writer who uses the most fantastical elements to tell her stories.

hahah, Lauren totally beat me to my favorite literary lady! I also love Atwood, but to expand the list I'll also mention Barbara Kingsolver. I've loved several of her books, The Poisonwood Bible being one of my favorites.

I like Sally Kempton. She's nonfiction, but I guess that still counts! It actually depends on whatever I'm reading currently.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'm going to have to go with the author of one of my all-time favorite books--Elizabeth Kostova, author of the incredibly well-researched "The Historian."

I also love Atwood & Kingsolver, but I'll pick Curtis Sittenfeld because she's from my parts (and yours Dynise!) and also because Prep is a book that I think a certain kind of smart, unconventional woman can relate with so strongly. She puts her finger on some topics I never saw anyone touch before in any books, like feeling envious of the boys in school who are so sure of themselves while the protagonist is so perpetually insecure. She had a bit of a sophomore slump with her second novel, but with American Wife, she was back and kicking! Awesome book, based off of Laura Bush, of all crazy things.

I love Margaret Mitchell. She was a true flapper who went against the grain to write Gone With the Wind. Love it or leave it, Margaret Mitchell was an icon in her time.

Cool contest! I'd have to say Karen Tei Yamashita. Her book Tropic of Orange is an amazing post-modern take on the environment, hyphenated identities and urban culture.

Sylvia Plath :)

Hi Dynise,
I hope everything is great for you.
I would say Nancy Huston, a Canadian writer who lives in Paris. She wrote fabulous novels, like The Mark of the Angel, as well as essays (and one about the women writers/poets who were married to men writers, like Beauvoir or Plath). Nancy Huston has got a really brillant perspective and I hope she will be more translated in English. Here is for the contest.
I send you an email soon. Bisous

If I was stranded on a desert island and could have a pile of books by a female writer it would have to be Agatha Christie...I'm a sucker for elegantly extraordinary whodunits!

ISABEL ALLENDE is both a prolific and celebrated author. It suffices to read any of her books to have clear who she is as a human and a woman. Both, "Paula" and "My Invented Country" are autobiographies and it after reading either of those books she quickly becomes one of those women you wish you could sit down and have a vegan scone and tea with. She is wise and funny. A universal woman.

Emily Brontë!

Aphra Behn (I agree with Valeria, though, about how amazing Kate Greenville is--and I think Christina Stead is another amazing Australian literary lady). Atwood's brilliant, and of course Virginia Woolf is one of the reasons why we have a canon of literary ladies now.
