post-all girlz' weekend takeout
I spent this weekend at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown, Washington DC, chilling with some of my BFFs. Every year, we get together in a different locale for our much anticipated All Girlz' Weekend. We catch up, laugh until we feel facial muscles we never knew existed, and drink [too many] cosmos.
Once my bus from DC landed in Philly, I promptly stopped at Banana Leaf, and ordered take out: Achat – veggies pickled in turmeric and spicy herbs with sesame seeds, and – vegetarian Chow Kueh Teow –fried flat rice noodles with veggies, bean sprouts, soy sauce and [lots of] chili paste. If you order Chow Kueh Teow, ask them to also omit the eggs. Phantasmagorical, as always. Just wish my BFFs were lived closer so they could share it with me.

Oooh fun! I wish I had that many girlfriends to get together with. My friend group is mostly dudes with a few girls thrown in for good measure. But sometimes it's fun to hang with no boys allowed.
BTW, I FINALLY ordered your book from Amazon. I made myself wait until after Christmas, since I placed a ban on myself from making personal purchases during the holidays. It should be in today or tomorrow. I can't wait!
I've just had a look to your pics on facebook. It seems you had lots of fun. It is a great idea this meeting. I should think about it.
I know that this is unrelated to this post but I couldn't find your older one.
I looked into a few items at Memphis Taproom and the fried pickles and onion rings aren't vegan. Just an FYI. If you want more info on it let me know.
Eric: there seems to be no consensus on this! Some people say they are; others say they aren't. When I asked, I heard they were.
Yeah, I thought only the dipping sauce made them not vegan (a friend use to work there) but I was on their site the other day and a TV station must have done a quick interview on them. Anyways in the shot you can see a milk container with some other ingredients. So I emailed them the other day asking:
"Is the batter used on the fried dill pickles vegan? Also what about the suicide rings? I know they are marked as vegetarian but I was not sure if that was just due to the dipping sauce.
Thanks!"
and got a reply
"Hey Eric!
Thanks for getting in touch! Neither item is vegan...they are both made with buttermilk (the pickles are soaked before being battered) and the suicide ring batter is made with buttermilk.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like fun!
These are always great get-togethers!
Phantasmagorical—even if I didn't love your food (but I do), I think I'd read your blog for your vocab alone :]
Important to have those kind of outings! Looks and sounds like you had a great time!
By the vast array of exotic drinks scattered willy-nilly on the table, I'd say you girls had a smashing good time. Nice!!

That looks like my perfect weekend! Vegan food and good times with friends, just what my blog is about.

i stopped at the banana leaf after the flower show last week...the fish sauce in everything scared me...i had a vegan cheesesteak in reading terminal instead...
How fun with all of your girlfriends!
Your weekend looks like so much fun! I've been diving into your cookbook again recently for some great appetizer ideas - love it!
Anonymouse: Next time, specify no fish sauce. The only way to increase vegan "supply" is to increase vegan demand.
I'll try the no fish sauce request next time...in the past in dc at my favorite thai place I requested no fish sauce and I could taste that it wasn't left out...usually once that happens i refuse to eat and dont even want to reorder...it just makes me frustrated...
