I picked up my CSA share tonight, punctuated by 6 succulent ears of corn on the cob. I ate two of the ears for supper tonight, liberally sprinkled with Old Bay Seasoning. This dinner was inspired by F-stop's son, the culinary iconoclast. Earlier this summer, we all had grilled corn and I watched, fascinated, as F-stop, Jr. showered his with a heavy coating of Old Bay Seasoning. Intrigued, I did the same and am forever hooked. The zesty spices are a surprising counter to the corn's sweetness.
For those of you unfamiliar with Old Bay, it's a piquant , unique spice blend that includes mustard, paprika, ginger, celery salt, red pepper, mace, cardamon, ginger and a few other gems. Made in Maryland, it's popular here in the Mid-Atlantic states, where it traditionally flavors crabs, and more trendily [and less cruelly], French fries. You can read more about its history here.
Try this. Really. If you can't get Old Bay Seasoning, I'd venture to guess you could substitute any spicy seasoning blend you like. Or make your own

Last time I looked for it I couldn't find it. I think I'll just make a spice blend of my own and toss it on my next ear of corn. It looks so good.
You know, I never know what to use my Old Bay for. I have some in the spice cabinet that never gets used. I'll have to try this.
I make Old Bay every now and then because my mom used it heaps when I was growing up. She lived in Maryland (and so did I, until I was 2), so happily put it on just about anything. Never corn though. I will have to try!
Old Bay doesn't exist over here, but I've seen it in all sorts of recipes - any ideas where there's a good recipe to make something similar? I think I've got a lot of those ingredients in my cupboard!
Well there's a recipe in my book Celebrate Vegan, which I use in faux crab cakes. If you don't have it, email me and I'll share :)
What's up, cool website you've gotten at this time there http://shlpharmacy.com/
