recent happenings and contest winners

Yours truly, at the Ocean County Cookbook Fair

Ocean County Book Fair
Well, the cookbook officially hits the bookstores on October 1, but family and friends have already spied it for sale at larger bookstores. This Sunday, I did a book signing and offered recipe tastings at the Ocean County Book Fair in Toms River, NJ. I met some wonderful people, all of whom were interested in animal-free cooking. By the end of the day, the samples were all snarfed up and the cookbooks were all sold out. The saleswoman at the book stand told me that my cookbook and one other one were the day's most popular sellers. Nice to hear!

Washing an amazingly well-behaved pooch.

Dog Wash for PAWS
Last weekend, I participated in a Dog Wash at the South Street Whole Foods to benefit Philly PAWS. I washed some amazingly well-behaved pooches, as did my amigos. We raised a ton of cash; Philly folks are so generous. We also introduced pedestrians to some wonderful foster animals who need loving, forever homes.

Jelly the Rottweiler is a former stray. Such a sweetheart!

A passer-by makes friends with a kitten in need of a home.

He doesn't exactly like it, but he knows he'll get a treat once it's over.

If you are interested in adopting a cat or dog or making a donation, please contact PhillyPAWS.

Silk Heart Health Contest Winners
So many impressive haiku--but I could only pick two winners. Congratulations to Bazu for her Ode to Mango Salsa. And to DoggyBloggy for his song to soy milk. Please email me your addresses, and I will send you the coupons.

Congratulations on the new book! What a great cover. I'll have to run by Powell's this week and see if I can get one there.

Cute doggy pics too!

I'm so happy that your book is out! YOu look gorgeous at the signing- I couldn't stop admiring your jacket. Wow.

Awww, the pups for adoption are so adorable. I was at a cat adopt-a-thon yesterday and bonded with a rolly-polly little girl named Poppy. I so wish I could have another cat!

And finally, yay! I'm glad my mango haiku pleased you! I think you have my mailing address? Let me know if you don't.

Dynise, the book looks FABULOUS. I love that you still have time to wash dogs for charity, even though you're a big-wig author these days ;)

The new book is great - I pre-ordered mine from Amazon here in the UK and it arrived this morning. Have just been enjoying a cuppa and trying to decide which recipes I'm going to try first!Great recipes am sure the book will be a huge success.

Hi Dynise,
I recently made the recipe you gave to veg news, Panko Crusted Tofu with a tamarind glaze.

I had some trouble with the measurements. There wasn't nearly enough cornstarch to thicken the sauce, I had to quadruple it! Also I was unsure about why it called for adding water to the sauce, I did it, but it seemed to just add to the simmering time of the sauce since there is already apple juice in it to dissolve the tamarind, etc. Also much of the cumin and raspberry jam flavors were over powered by the tamarind. I know I'm getting carried away....

I really enjoyed the fun texture of panko tofu, I never really do much frying and it turned out really crispy!
I didn't know where to post this comment. Sorry. I love your blog! And can't wait for the cookbook!

Thanks for all the tasty ideas.

Erika: Sorry the recipe didn't work out for you. It worked fabulously for my recipe testers, who put it through the ringer, and also informally, with my home testers. Go figure.

I bought the book at Border's on the first day it was out. I love it! I've already made Roasted Red Pepper and Onion Frittata, Roasted Root Vegetable Soup, and Cranberry Upside-Down Cake. Tonight we are having the Basil-Cream Sauce over seitan and Oven-Roasted Potatoes. This is fast becoming a favorite cookbook. Thank you ever so much.
